Prevent Type 2 Diabetes
The Bolsa Medical Group Diabetes Prevention Program is part of the
National Diabetes Prevention Program, led by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It is proven to help people with prediabetes prevent or delay development of Type 2 diabetes.
What is Type 2 Diabetes?
Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes.
If you have type 2 diabetes your body does not use insulin properly. This is called insulin resistance. At first, your pancreas makes extra insulin to make up for it. But, over time it isn't able to keep up and can't make enough insulin to keep your blood glucose at normal levels.
Type 2 diabetes is a serious condition. It can lead to health issues such as heart attack, stroke, blindness, kidney failure, or loss of toes, feet, or legs.
What is prediabetes?
Prediabetes means a person's blood sugar levels are higher than normal. Without lifestyle changes, prediabetes puts you at high risk for developing Type 2 diabetes.
Who benefits from this program?
The Bolsa Medical Group Diabetes Prevention Program is an evidence-based lifestyle change program developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The program is free to Bolsa Medical Group patients and provides you with access to a skilled lifestyle coach and 12 months of support in a friendly group setting.
Are you at risk for diabetes?
Type 2 diabetes is a growing problem among Asian Americans. Based on the Centers for Disease Control, the age-adjusted prevalence of T2 Diabetes for Asian Americans is 9%, placing them at “moderate risk”. You are at increased risk for prediabetes if you:
- Have a family history of Type 2 diabetes
- Are overweight
- Get little to no exercise in a typical day
- Are over 45 years old
- Have had gestational diabetes or gave birth to a baby weighing more than 9 pounds
- If you think you may be at risk, ask your primary care physician. You can do a blood test to determine if you have prediabetes.
How can we help you?
Behavior change through our diabetes program has helped people with prediabetes reduce their risk of developing Type 2 diabetes by half. Moderate lifestyle changes, along with losing 5 to 7 percent of body weight, reduces the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes by 58 percent in those with prediabetes, according to research by the CDC's Diabetes Prevention Program.
